<p dir="ltr">The real reason for Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s return to Australia has been revealed.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Aussie lovebirds and their daughters Sunday, 14, and Faith, 11, landed Down Under in time for Christmas to spend some quality time with their mothers.</p> <p dir="ltr">"My mum just turned 80 and Nic’s mum … who knows how many Christmases we get with anybody ever, but particularly with our mums,” Keith told <a href="https://www.newidea.com.au/nicole-kidman-mum-janelle-sick" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New Idea</a>.</p> <p dir="ltr">“[We] really cherish that chance to spend Chrissy with [our mums] and our family in Australia,” he added after mentioning the loss of their fathers in the last few years.</p> <p dir="ltr">During Nicole’s last visit to Australia at the start of 2022, she revealed that her mother Janelle, now 82, was unwell.</p> <p dir="ltr">“We’re here primarily to take care of my mother and to have her surrounded by her grandchildren,” Nicole said.</p> <p dir="ltr">“She has every brain faculty available, so she hasn’t lost anything. Cash is not king when it comes to super

<p>Record low interest rates are shrinking financial returns for conservative fund members.</p> <p>Regardless of whether your nest egg is self-managed or in a retail or industry super fund, if it’s mainly been sitting in cash you’ve missed out on healthy returns delivered by diversification.</p> <p>Five years ago, seven per cent term deposits were offered. But this is no longer the case. Many experts expect slim cash returns for a long time. Recently, deposits pay only two-and-a-half per cent.</p> <p>The fast-growing self-managed superannuation sector seems to be hit the hardest by the cash crash as members usually make their own investment decisions. Those who don’t use SMSFs should also check that cash does not dominate their savings. Most will already have a diverse range on investments through their fund’s default investment options.</p> <p>In Australia, we have almost 550 million SMSFs with more than one million members. According to official figures, they hold about 28 per cent of their money in cash. Typical retail and industry super funds hold 14 per cent of their money in cash.</p> <p>International shares, which is a top-performing asset class over the last five years, represents less than one per cent of SMSF assets compared with 22 per cent for other funds. </p> <p>Barbara Smith, CEO of Oasis Wealth and author of new book Keep it Super Simple, says that cash returns were nice for those who locked money in term deposits five years ago. But record low interest rates today mean now is not the time to do it again.</p> <p>“Our experience is sometimes people get scared and just leave it sitting in cash,” she says.</p> <p>“Now that rates have fallen, people are being a little proactive.”</p> <p>She says that people need to do their research and “always keep yourself close to your money.”</p> <p>Online share trading websites such as CommSec have more information than they’ve had before, Smith says.</p> <p>“The worst thing people do is invest in things they don’t understand. Once they do that you can start to see the money drizzle away. Take it slowly and gradually invest.”</p> <p>Andrea Slattery, CEO of the SMSE Association, says that the claim that SMSFs invest mainly in cash is incorrect. She says they get a lot of international exposure via investing in Aussie companies with big offshore earnings, like BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Westfield.</p> <p>“SMSFs are more flexible and leading the market in moving into new investments,” she says.</p> <p>“In the main, people are more engaged, they trust their specialist adviser and are more comfortable with the decisions that have been made.</p> <p>“You can’t actually do everything yourself – there are a couple of compulsory advisers you need – one’s an auditor and one’s an actuary. The Northman reviewed

<p dir="ltr"><em>The Northman</em> is a dark and gritty retelling of a Nordic legend that is packed with violence, themes of the supernatural and, even, incest.</p> <p dir="ltr">Amleth is the son of a Viking king who witnesses his uncle murder his father and seize the crown for himself.</p> <p dir="ltr">His mother is taken prisoner and Amleth barely manages to escape with his life. He flees on a rowboat and vows to avenge his father and rescue his mother.</p> <p dir="ltr">Aleksander Skarsgard plays a much-older Amleth who has become, years later, a cold- blooded warrior.</p> <p dir="ltr">He dances around campfires wearing a wolf headdress, leads raiding parties against villages and slaughters soldiers and defenceless townsfolk alike.</p> <p dir="ltr">One thing has remained unchanged: his lust for revenge.</p> <p dir="ltr">Amleth is rounding up the captives from his latest raid when he overhears his uncle has been overthrown and exiled to Iceland.</p> <p dir="ltr">The prisoners are to be shipped over to him and Amleth plots his revenge: he will disguise himself as a slave, travel with the captives on the boat, and kill his uncle.</p> <p dir="ltr">Plenty more bloodshed follows as Amleth carries out his plan.</p> <p dir="ltr">Heads are bashed in, arms are hacked off and, in one scene, limbs are rearranged in the shape of a horse.</p> <p dir="ltr">The film spirals into the realm of the weird with the episodes of violence broken up by pagan orgies, incest and Norse mythology.</p> <p dir="ltr">Amleth fights a sword-wielding skeleton, consults a shaman who prophesies through a decapitated head and rides a horse through the sky towards Valhalla.</p> <p dir="ltr">Amleth’s mother trying to seduce her son is the scene that really takes this film into disturbing territory.</p> <p dir="ltr">Director Robert Eggers has clearly intended to move away from the glamourised portrayal of Viking culture we have seen in TV shows like ‘Vikings’.</p> <p dir="ltr">Surprisingly, the brutality and rawness are the perfect ingredients that make an enjoyable film.</p> <p dir="ltr">There is not a dull moment in the 2 hour and 17-minute-long runtime and Eggers proves why he may be the next best emerging director.</p> <p dir="ltr">If there’s one pitfall in the film it’s that Amleth had several chances to kill his uncle but, for some reason, didn’t do it.</p> <p dir="ltr">The film feels like it could have ended five different ways, before it finally does.</p> <p dir="ltr">That being said, the final battle between Amleth and his uncle is nothing short of epic. </p> <p dir="ltr">If you have a stomach made of iron then this is a film definitely worth watching. </p> <p dir="ltr"><em><strong>Written by Aidan Wondracz.</strong></em></p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: YouTube </em></p>

First look at Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball

<p><em>Image: Getty </em></p> <p>Fans have got their first look at Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball in upcoming biopic<span> </span><em>Being the Ricardos<span> </span></em>with the teaser trailer dropping overnight.</p> <p>The Aaron Sorkin film follows Hollywood couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, who is played by Javier Bardem, during a production week on the set of their hit sitcom<span> </span><em>I Love Lucy.</em></p> <p>Throughout a Monday table read all the way through an audience shot on Friday, both Ball and Arnaz face challenges that could end both of their careers and their marriage.</p> <p>In the trailer, quick glimpses of the couple’s whirlwind life are shown accompanied by Kidman’s voiceover, with the first clear look at Kidman coming via the re-creation of Ball’s iconic grape stomping scene.</p> <p>Production on the movie was kept tightly under wraps with a closed set throughout, as Kidman showed on social media during filming.</p> <p>In Kidman’s recent Variety Actors on Actors conversation with Chris Rock, she stated that the biopic will not be a remake of<span> </span><em>I Love Lucy</em>, but will instead tackle serious themes.</p> <p>“The strange thing about Lucille Ball is that everyone thinks we’re remaking the ‘I Love Lucy’ show, it’s so not that,” Kidman said.</p> <p>“It’s about Lucy and Desi and their relationship and their marriage. It’s very deep actually.”</p> <p><em>Being the Ricardos</em><span> </span>also navigates the racial barriers that the couple had to face, with Desi being discriminated against for being Cuban, and Lucille fighting for him to remain on the show.</p> <p>Sorkin has written the screenplay and helms the film for Amazon Studios and Escape Artists. <p>Nicole Kidman has revealed the sweet moment she knew she was "a goner" for her husband Keith Urban, when he turned up at the door of her New York apartment at 5 am with flowers.</p> <p>The Aussie actress told Jimmy Fallon about the special moment during an appearance on <em>The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon</em>.</p> <p>"He sat on the stoop of my New York apartment,” she said. “I came out, it was 5 am in the morning and it was my birthday, and he had flowers," Kidman recalled of the day back in June 20, 2005.</p> <p>"And that was it. I was a goner. I Am Woman is Helen Reddy’s story

<p>When Helen Reddy Reddy came out and sang <em>I Am Woman</em> nearly 50 years ago, the world listened. Like most songs, there was an important story behind it and the film, <em>I Am Woman</em> tells that story in fascinating detail.</p> <p>It does seem strange that no-one had told Helen Reddy’s story on the big screen before. Sure, Reddy did write a book about her life titled,<em> The Woman I Am,</em> but to date, we haven’t had a film about this iconic Australian singer-songwriter and Grammy-award winning artist.</p> <p>Not only is Reddy one of the most successful performing artists ever to emerge from Australia, she’s also the person who co-wrote and sang the song that went on to become the anthem for the women’s movement in the 1970s – <em>I Am Woman.</em></p> <p><strong>The film <em>I am Woman</em> tells the full story</strong></p> <p>Released earlier in 2020, the film about Reddy’s life is now streaming on <a href="https://www.stan.com.au/">Stan. </a></p> <p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6WLMz8Qeg4A" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></p> <p>Made by the producers of <em>The Sapphires</em>, <em>I Am Woman</em> was directed by Unjoo Moon and shot by Oscar-winning cinematographer Dion Beebe. She became an icon of the 1970s feminist movement by co-writing a song which galvanised a generation of women to fight for change.</p> <p><strong>Arrived in New York with $230 in her pocket</strong></p> <p>Helen Reddy arrived in New York in 1966 with $230 in her pocket and her three-year-old daughter, Tracy, on her arm.</p> <p>Reddy traveled to America because she’d been told she’d won a recording contract, but when she goes to see the record company about it, she’s met with blatant sexism and a dismissal of her work as a female artist.</p> <p>Without a visa, Reddy decides to stay in New York anyway and pursue a singing career, struggling to make ends meet and provide for her daughter. She befriends fellow Australian and legendary rock journalist, Lillian Roxon and later, it’s Roxon who inspires her to write and sing the iconic song, <em>I Am Woman. </em></p> <p>Roxon holds a party for her and it’s there Reddy meets Jeff Wald, a young aspiring talent manager who later becomes her agent and husband. Reddy’s story unfolds as she marries Wald and they move to LA so he can help her get the breaks she needs. But it’s not easy and Reddy has to persuade him to keep pushing her.</p> <p>In the end, Wald helps her achieve her goals, but it’s not enough to save their marriage because he becomes addicted to cocaine and this gradually turns their relationship toxic.</p> <p><strong><em>I am Woman</em></strong><strong> becomes an anthem</strong></p> <p>Reddy writes her iconic song, <em>I Am Woman</em>, during this time when she’s trying so hard to be heard as a musical artist in America. At exactly the same time, the Women’s Liberation Movement was at its peak.</p> <p><img style="width: 0px; height: 0px;" src="/nothing.jpg" alt="" data-udi="umb://media/a046199a0c1e4783add573ce4273060e" />Reddy has said <span>She was looking for songs that reflected a positive self-image that she felt she had gained from her participation in the women's liberation movement. She’s been reported as saying she was looking for the right song and she couldn’t find it, so she knew she had to write it herself.</span></p> <p><span>She worked on the song with another song writer, Ray Burton, and together they came up with <em>I am Woman</em>. </span>It became the perfect unofficial anthem and was a smash hit at the same time. Of course, the song upset some of the men who said it was “angry” or even “man-hating.”</p> <p>Reddy sang many popular songs after this one but she didn’t write many more, which would seem to be a pity.</p> <p><strong>The film is largely and Australian production</strong></p> <p>The film, <em>I Am Woman</em>, is a Goalpost Pictures production in association with Deep Blue Pacific. It had funding from Screen Australia, in association with WestEnd Films, Screen NSW, Adelaide Film Festival and South Australian Film Corporation.</p> <p>The film premiered in Sydney about a year and a half ago, with the director, Unjoo Moon, and the Australian actor, Tilda Cobham-Hervey, who played Reddy in the film.</p> <p>At the premiere, Unjoo Moon said she was thrilled to be there because: “It’s deeply meaningful to me that the release of Helen Reddy’s inspirational story, <em>I Am Woman</em>, will kick off in Australia. Not only did Helen’s story begin in Australia but so did our journey of making this movie.”</p> <p>Moon continued, saying her inspiration for the film came from her early years: “I remember so clearly, when I was a young girl growing up on the north shore here in Sydney. I wasn’t old enough to have been at a Helen Reddy concert but I remember what would happen when her music came on the radio. I’d be sitting in the back seat of the station wagon and the windows would get rolled down and everyone’s hair would come out – and I knew she just had this kind of impact on my mother and her friends,” said Moon.</p> <p><strong>This film still has so much relevance today</strong></p> <p>Some reviewers have said this film about Reddy’s life is timely for our current situation because it gives us historical background to issues which are still relevant to feminist discussions today.</p> <p>While it appeals to a specific audience – those women who grew up with Reddy’s songs as background to their lives and their children – it’s still interesting for younger women who may not know about these events.</p> <p>For the women and their children who lived through the 1970s, watching Reddy sing her songs on the big screen would be a deeply personal and rewarding experience.</p> <p>For those who are younger and don’t know Reddy’s songs as well, it’s probably enough to learn about how these songs gave women inspiration for their feminist cause – and how Reddy will always hold a special place in their hearts for the role she played as a strong and successful woman.</p> <p><strong>Helen Reddy passed away in September 2020</strong></p> <p>Helen Reddy was able to see the film, <em>I Am Woman</em> in 2020 but sadly, she passed away on September 29, 2020.</p> <p>“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother,” her daughter Traci and son Jordan posted on Facebook.</p> <p>“She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and a truly formidable woman.</p> <p><strong>You can watch <em>I Am Woman</em> now on <a href="mailto:https://www.stan.com.au/">Stan.</a></strong></p>
